In 2022, the volume of construction works in Romania increased as gross series by 12.9% y-o-y, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed. By structure elements, rises were reported for capital repair works (+25.7%), for maintenance and current repair works (+20.2%) and for new construction works (+8.9%). By construction objects, increases were recorded for non-residential buildings (+21.8%), for engineering works (+13.2%) and for residential buildings (+4.8%).
The volume of construction works in the country was up 10.8% as adjusted series according to the number of working days and to seasonality, an increase reflected in capital repair works (+18.5%), in maintenance and current repair works (+17.5%) and in new construction works (+7.5%). By construction objects, rises were recorded for non-residential buildings (+20.5%), for engineering works (+7.2%) and for residential buildings (+4.8%).
December 2022 compared to November 2022
In December 2022 alone, the volume of construction works in Romania increased, as gross series, by 14.2% compared to November 2022 an increase reflected in maintenance and current repair works (+30.6%), in capital repair works (+21.2%) and in new construction works (+7.1%). By construction objects, rises were reported for engineering works (+20.8%), for non-residential buildings (+8.0%) and for residential buildings (+7.9%).
During the final month of 2022, the volume of construction works was down 0.3% as adjusted series according to the number of working days and to seasonality, a drop reflected in new construction works (-4.5%) and in capital repair works (-0.4%). The maintenance and current repair works were up 12.2%. By construction objects, the volume of construction works decreased for residential buildings (-6.1%) and for non-residential buildings (-5.7%). The engineering works were up 3.5%.
December 2022 compared to December 2021
On a yearly basis, the volume of construction works increased, as gross series, by 15.1%, an increase reflected in capital repair works (+34.7%), in maintenance and current repair works (+29.6%) and in new construction works (+7.0%). By construction objects, rises were reported for non-residential buildings (+19.8%), for engineering works (+19.2%) and for residential buildings (+1.0%).
At the same time, the volume of construction works increased overall, as adjusted series according to the number of working days and to seasonality, by 19.1%. By structure elements, rises were recorded for capital repair works (+43.3%), for maintenance and current repair works (+28.8%) and for new construction works (+14.3%). By construction objects, the volume of construction works rose for non-residential buildings (+24.1%), for engineering works (+22.0%) and for residential buildings (+4.8%).
The Romanian construction sector’s double-digit annual growth rates look impressive but the figures overestimate the actual value-added generated by the sector, while they partly reflect the rising price of construction materials.
