Bucharest’s Euro Tower developed by Cascade Group has officially become the first LEED Zero Carbon certified building in Romania.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership. The LEED framework informs all building types including new construction, interiors, operations and maintenance, and core and shell.
LEED Zero Carbon, part of the LEED sustainable development certification methodology, is considered the most stringent program in the world for assessing carbon neutrality in buildings.
In 2009, the class A office building located in the Central-North part of Bucharest, on the junction of Barbu Vacarescu Street and Lacul Tei Boulevard, had also been awarded by the BREEAM the Post Construction Green Certificate with the rating “Very Good”, thus becoming the first Green office building fully certified delivered in Romania.
The building rated especially well in the Transport, Health and Wellbeing and Energy sections in the BREEAM certification. Indeed, thanks to its smart design it allows abundant natural light to come in over the entire day and the lighting and thermal systems, controlled by occupants individually, leads to energy savings.
Euro Tower, designed by architect Dorin Stefan, covers a gross area of 18,000 sqm arranged on five underground levels including 200 parking places and 18 above ground floors. At a height of 92 metres (302 ft), the construction was finished in 2010.
Cascade Group embarked on a comprehensive process of long-term neutralization of all CO2 emissions a few years ago, as part of a long-term decarbonization strategy. The decarbonization strategy was developed and conducted by BuildGreen, a leading consultant in sustainable building design, development and certification in Romania. Euro Tower reached the level of carbon neutrality in 2019, as well as in 2020, according to the assessment of the building’s degree of CO2 emissions during that period.
