The Isla Brown Corinthia hotel in Greece recently emerged as the winner in the Excellent Architecture Category of the German Design Awards 2024, presented by the German Design Council. Athens-based Elastic Architects was applauded for the redesign of the iconic 1970s Hanikian hotel and its transformation into the Isla Brown Corinthia, nestled on the northern edge of the Greek Volcanic Arc overlooking the Corinthian Gulf.
“Inspired by a mythological embodiment of a volcanic eruption, the design introduces panoramic views, and emulates the fluidity of lava: The square volumes of the building become a stack of white “pebbles” while successive curved surfaces on the facades of the building give a dynamic form and a sculpture effect that creates an overall sense of movement” says the team at Elastic Architects. “The color palette features volcanic shades of terracotta and amber, bronze mirrors, gold, and tinted glass.”
The hotel features 166 guest rooms and suites, each offering indoor dining, two bathrooms, and freestanding bathtubs. The common spaces, a symphony of design excellence, include a lobby, an indoor sea-view bar with a bronze sculptural countertop, a gym, a spa, an all-day dining restaurant and an infinity rooftop shallow pool with bar and lounge seating areas offering extended views over the Corinthian Gulf.
The five-star beachside resort is a member of Brown Hotels, an international hospitality group known for a diverse portfolio of design-led boutique urban properties. The Group is vastly expanding with various properties under development in Israel, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, the UK and Germany. Its goal is to create dwellings that not only show tourists the real culture and creativity of the city’s population, but also to expand the nightlife and neighborhood joints for locals.
The creative vision of the Elastic team for Isla Brown Corinthia has also been acknowledged by the International Design Awards (IDA) with the ‘Gold’ architecture prize in the ‘Hotels & Resorts’ category by the (IDA) 2022. Elastic was founded by Ria Vogiatzi and Alexandros Xenos in 2005. With offices in Athens, London, Toronto, Dubai and Cyprus, the studio specializes in high-end hospitality and mixed-use resort design with a variety of international and domestic large-scale projects in their portfolio.
